Updated: Aug 6
Cowichan, are you looking to experience something new close to home this summer? Check out Chemainus.
A quaint town by the sea, Chemainus is adjusting to the ‘new normal’ and bustling with activity right now, including live music at the bandshell in Waterwheel Park.
The Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society has arranged for musical performances in Waterwheel Park while following public health guidelines. Allowing a maximum of 50 visitors, organizers have ensured all sanitation and other public health standards are met.
Performances begin every Tuesday night from 7 pm – 9 pm, with some larger and more notable acts due to take the stage on specific dates. Mark your calendars for A Bluegrass Afternoon on August 1st, the South Island Rhyme Kings on August 8th, Wayne Montgomery August 15th, and Old Time Rock and Roll on August 22nd.
There is more than live music to discover in Chemainus. Did you know you can go scuba diving and find a sunken 737 plane? This self-led expedition can be accessed off Kin Beach Park, a few hundred metres off of the lighthouse. The exact coordinates can be found online.
Also worth checking out is the Chemainus Public Market, which hosts not only some wonderful vendors, but also Archie’s, a 50’s themed diner, and a fresh fish and chip restaurant. Also on site is the Wizards Arcade, complete with pinball machines and everything you would want to have fun with the whole family.
For those curious about history, you can discover the new displays and wealth of artifacts and other wonderful sights at the Chemainus Valley Museum. They are open and ready for exploration.
Chemainus is unlike any other town at any time of the year. There are always great reasons to visit, from unique artisan shops, galleries, restaurants, pubs, and cafés, to the famous murals and sculptures that brighten up any shopping experience. If you have been here before, visit again to discover how different the town is outside of the hustle and bustle of typical tourism. You are sure to discover a new favourite getaway.
